Leading Through Humanity, Purpose and Grit ft. Lisa Lang

Leading Through Humanity, Purpose and Grit ft. Lisa Lang

Hello once again to the fantastic readers and listeners of The MikedUp Show, where we strive to shine a light onto the corners of the mortgage industry that aren’t talked about at conferences or splashed across LinkedIn posts.

Our recent conversation with Lisa Lang - EVP and Head of Capital Bank Home Loans - delivered one of the most multidimensional leadership narratives we’ve had on the show. Lisa’s story started the same way many mortgage careers do: by taking a lending job until “she found something else.” What she actually found was a career, a calling, and a leadership style defined by empowerment, collaboration, and a commitment to doing the right thing. Read on for her fascinating ideas and insights!

EMPOWERMENT IS A REQUIREMENT

One of the most striking things about Lisa’s leadership philosophy is how deeply it rejects the old-school belief that leaders must project certainty at all times. She talked candidly about how, early in her career, she believed that a strong leader always has the answer. Today, she couldn’t disagree with that opinion more. “Leaders don’t have all of the answers,” she said. “Nobody does. The best thing you can do as a leader is empower your team to do what they’re best at.” I SSUE 56 This isn’t a soft philosophy. It’s a performance one. Empowered teams work faster, think more creatively, and take ownership in ways that top-down cultures never replicate. But empowerment requires the thing that many mortgage organizations struggle with the most: trust. Trust that people can figure things out. Trust that mistakes can be fixed. Trust that a high-performing team isn’t built through control, but through connection. As Lisa reminded us, the real work often happens between the meetings: when leaders are planning and mapping what comes next. Leadership today isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about being the person who creates the most capacity for others to thrive. Lisa’s core philosophy is simple : Do the right thing, even when nobody is watching.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX THE ‘NEXT GENERATION’ PROBLEM

It’s no secret that the mortgage workforce is aging. Lisa joked about not being part of the “aging out group” yet, but the point is well taken: the industry is light on young talent and heavy on retirement-ready leadership. She also acknowledged the irony of a world where thousands of new graduates don’t even know mortgage is a viable career path. “People hear the word ‘mortgage’ and they think, ‘Oh, someone who helps people buy a home.’ They don’t realize all the different facets of what makes homeownership possible.”

It’s a challenge - and an invitation. Mortgage companies that want to thrive in the next decade need to stop waiting for young professionals to stumble into the industry the way previous generations did. Recruiting has to be intentional, strategic, and built on the idea that the mortgage ecosystem is rich with roles: marketing, analytics, risk, tech, finance, operations, community development, compliance, and leadership pathways that don’t require twenty years of tenure to access. Leadership isn’t just about guiding the people already on your team. It’s about inspiring the people who aren’t here yet to imagine a future in our field

2:37 - 3:02 -- "The best advice I received was from my mother and stepfather - figure out things on your own. You're going to make mistakes, but chart your own path. There's nothing that can't be fixed. And that gave me the confidence to start my mortgage journey. Just rolling up my sleeves in the day-to-day and learning everything from the bottom up."

TREATING COLLABORATION AS AN ADVANTAGE, NOT A THREAT

One of the moments from the podcast that stuck with us long after our conversation was Lisa’s story about a dinner in Boston. It was one of those big-group industry dinners: leaders from multiple companies, multiple states, multiple viewpoints. Instead of treating the evening like a networking formality, Lisa proposed something unexpected: everyone around the table should introduce themselves and share a bit about who they are and what they stand for. What followed, as she put it, was synergy. The kind of synergy leaders spend their entire careers trying to manufacture. The belief used to be that sharing insights meant surrendering competitive edge. To Lisa, the opposite is true. “We are stronger together,” she said. “There’s enough business out there for everybody who wants to get it.” Today’s most successful lenders aren’t the ones who build walls. They’re the ones who open doors.

7:56 - 8:15 -- "Years ago when I was coming up in mortgage, a lot of people did not want to share information between organizations and companies. They felt that they lost that competitive edge. I've always looked at it a little bit differently. I think that - and this isn't cliche, I just believe in it - that we are stronger together."

STAYING GROUNDED THROUGH RESILIENCE AND PURPOSE

There’s a reason Lisa’s leadership feels grounded: because it is. Not in numbers or volume or bragging rights, but in people, purpose, and the belief that what we do matters. Mortgage isn’t just transactions. It’s an engine of generational wealth and a life milestone for millions of families. Her perspective is also shaped by something deeper. As a breast cancer survivor, Lisa understands resilience in ways that extend far beyond the office. Her involvement in cancer organizations, fundraising efforts, and community support initiatives isn’t empty or performative. It’s personal. When she talked about the tough last 3 ½ years in the mortgage space, she connected it to something she knows firsthand: the value of support systems. During the early days of the downturn, she set up bi-weekly calls with a respected colleague from another organization. Not to trade competitive intelligence, but to share the burden, to compare notes, and to validate the experience of leading through uncertainty. Everybody needs someone sometimes. Leaders included

30:30 - 30:49 -- "I don't like to wake up every day and do the same thing day in and day out. Every day, I plan my day out and I think it's going to go a certain way and I have these meetings and I'm going to talk to this person and that person. And really by noon, my day pivots to something else entirely. Not in a bad way. But by the end of the day, I love never being bored."
