Winning With Passion & Ownership ft. Patty Arvielo

Winning With Passion & Ownership ft. Patty Arvielo

Hello once again from Mike and Mike! As you know, we work in an industry that often measures success in units, volumes, and margins. So it can be easy to lose sight of what actually drives long-term growth. On this episode of The MikedUp Show, we sat down with Patty Arvielo, CEO and Co-Founder of New American Funding, to explore a deeper layer of leadership.

For Patty, leadership isn’t rooted just in numbers, but also passion and human connection. What emerged from our chat was not a playbook built on tactics, but a philosophy built on mindset. From how loan officers view their careers to how leaders build culture at scale, Patty’s perspective offers a reminder that the mortgage business is still, at its core, a people business.

That distinction matters. The mortgage industry is filled with professionals who entered the business unintentionally, yet stayed because they discovered something deeper: a connection to helping people achieve their homeownership dreams. Patty pointed out that those who approach the business as a job will inevitably fall behind those who approach it as a calling. “If you're coming into this industry looking at it as a job… you will never match their energy,” she explained. This presents both an opportunity and a challenge. Recruiting for skill is not enough. Developing and sustaining passion within teams becomes a strategic priority. Because in a market where products and pricing are often commoditized, energy and enthusiasm are what separate top performers from the rest

Truework is the only all-in-one, automated VOIE platform that fully replaces costly in-house verification waterfalls by orchestrating all major verification methods within a single platform. With an industry-leading 75% completion rate, we have helped mortgage providers achieve up to 50% cost savings on their verification process, resulting in multi-million dollar savings. Looking to save on verification costs while improving borrower experience and pull-through? Let’s talk.

TRANSITIONING FROM EMPLOYEE TO ENTREPRENEUR

Patty’s own journey reflects a transformation that many in the industry struggle to make. She began as a contract loan processor, running her own book of business but still thinking like an employee. “I didn’t see myself as an entrepreneur… I saw myself as relying on them,” she admitted. That mindset shifted when she was introduced to entrepreneurial thinking; specifically, the willingness to take risk and invest in long-term growth. She emphasized that this transition does not happen overnight. It is built through incremental progress.

The distinction between employee and entrepreneur is not defined by job title, but by perspective. Entrepreneurs invest in themselves. They reinvest earnings into growth. They take ownership of outcomes rather than relying on external structures. “It takes money to build a company… to invest in a company to build,” she noted. For loan officers, this means rethinking their role within a platform. They are not simply participants in a system, they are operators of their own micro-business within that system. The sooner that mindset shift occurs, and originators understand the potential they have, the sooner growth accelerates.

THE DATABASE IS THE BUSINESS

If there was one concept Patty reinforced repeatedly, it was this: the database is everything. “NAF is a platform… the originator is the business,” she said. This framing fundamentally changes how LOs should approach their work. Instead of focusing solely on individual transactions, they should be building a long-term asset: a network of relationships that generates repeat and referral business over time. She shared an example of a long-tenured top producer who no longer relies on traditional prospecting methods. Instead, she works her database consistently, maintaining relationships that have been cultivated over decades. As customer acquisition costs continue to rise and competition is intensifying, this approach becomes even more valuable. The message is clear: every contact matters, and every interaction contributes to building a future pipeline.

LEADERSHIP FROM THE HEART: BUILDING LOYALTY AND LONGEVITY

Beyond production and technology, Patty’s leadership philosophy centers on something less tangible but equally critical: heart. “I say this company is driven by love,” she said. That statement reflects a broader approach to leadership that prioritizes people over processes. At NAF, human capital is viewed as the most important asset. Culture is built through respect, accessibility, and a genuine commitment to supporting team members.

Patty described her role as the “people person,” focused on nurturing relationships within the organization. She emphasized the importance of understanding individual personalities, delivering feedback with respect, and creating an environment where employees feel valued. This approach is particularly significant in an industry known for high turnover. By fostering a culture of trust and connection, leaders can create stability and loyalty that many companies lack. Patty acknowledged that not everyone will succeed or stay, but real leadership involves guiding and helping those who are willing to grow and do their part to help the team thrive.
